Overview

The main goal of developing FolkStudio 1.0 was to provide musicians with a tool to make their music - easy, convenient and fast - using modern technologies of sound and music data processing and keeping the traditions of User Interface, common for the music software market.

Thus, FolkStudio 1.0 is a track-based Audio/MIDI sequencer that allows you to work with audio (WAV, mp3) and MIDI files as well as with audio Loops (commonly known as ACIDized loops). FolkStudio is VST/VSTi host program for third-party audio signal processing and soft synthesizers plug-ins, but it also has its own small set of VST/VSTi plug-ins. Pitch Shifting and Time Stretching techniques, flexibly implemented in the program, allow working with audio Loops, which is the most effective way for creating music in many modern styles, as well as for various application tasks such as soundtracks for computer games, Internet content or movies.

FolkStudio 1.0 main editing approach is non-destructive editing, meaning that most operations with the initial data (audio file, loops, MIDI data) are made with the help of "built-over" clips, envelopes, FX automation and so on. So any single piece of source data like an audio file can be used numerous times in one or in several projects, with different changes applied to them. Moreover, we can at any time choose another way of transforming, editing or mixing the same data, while not actually disrupting the initial file.

Graphic User Interface of FolkStudio 1.0 is based on a time-proved style, with most frequently used panes, such as Track, Mixer, Navigator, Pool, FX, etc., easily available on the screen, though some of them can be hidden or replaced.

The MIDI editing part of this version of FolkStudio is quite modest and includes a convenient Piano-Roll and some facilities for Clips and controllers editing. However, we are working on adding some powerful algorithms for harmonization, morphing, modeling and processing, based on MIDI Tools and FX that were used in our previous products. These features will be available with new version and will increase the possibilities of the program radically.
